Why Your Hair Topper Slips (and 5 Ways to Fix It)

Woman wearing a hair topper

You clip it in, you feel great, and by 2 pm you're pushing it back into place. A slipping topper is annoying, but it's almost always fixable.

Here are the five reasons toppers slip, and the fix for each.

1

Clips in the wrong hair

The problem: The clips are sitting on the thinnest hair, which can't hold them.
The fix: Move the clips out to where your hair is thicker. If they can't reach, you need a slightly bigger base.

The base is too small

The problem: The edges of the base land in the thin area, so there's nothing solid to clip into.
The fix: Measure the thin area again and add half an inch on each side. That's the base size to aim for.
3

Clips too far from the roots

The problem: The clip grabs the middle of the hair, which slides.
The fix: Push each clip right down to the roots before you snap it shut.

Hair is freshly washed and slippery

The problem: Very clean, soft hair gives clips less grip.
The fix: Wear it on second-day hair, or add a little texture spray at the roots where the clips go.
5

The topper is too heavy for your hair

The problem: A long, full topper pulls down on fine hair all day.
The fix: Go one length shorter or pick lighter density. Less weight, less slipping.

Quick emergency fix: a bobby pin crossed over the back clip holds it in place for the rest of the day.

Your questions

Slipping topper: FAQ

Why does my hair topper keep slipping?

Usually the clips are in thin hair, not close enough to the roots, or the base is too small.

How do I keep my topper in place all day?

Clip into healthy hair at the roots, tease a tiny base under each clip, and pick a size that reaches past the thin area.

Can I use pins with a topper?

Yes. A bobby pin crossed over a clip is a good backup.

Clip it in once. Forget about it.

The right size and the right clip spots do the work.
